It depends
For homeowners deciding whether a permanently installed Generac air-cooled ~22 kW standby belongs in the stack — not whether a carton on Amazon is “enough watts.”

A whole-home standby in this class is a permanently installed outdoor set on natural gas or vapor LP. It starts when utility voltage drops, feeds the house through an automatic transfer switch (ATS), and shuts down when utility returns. Not a portable inverter. Not a ~2 kWh battery station.
Locked reference SKU: Generac G0072600 (generator-only Cellular air-cooled). Sibling G0073250 is the same class plus a 200 A service-rated ATS bundle. Generac’s air-cooled 22–28 kW sheet groups them with identical continuous ratings. Do not mash older Evolution Wi‑Fi 22 kW codes or liquid-cooled Protector lines into this page.

Running watts first: plan against 21–22 kW continuous, not the marketing “whole home” phrase. Main line breaker: 100 A. Engine: G-Force 1000 Series, 997 cc, 3,600 rpm. Enclosure: aluminum, ~46.4 × 26.3 × 30.7 in, ~451 lb. Sound (sheet): ~67 dB(A) @ 23 ft normal load; Quiet-Test™ ~55 dB(A). THD <5% (True Power™).
Will run (when load-calculated and ATS-matched): mid-size central A/C and furnace blowers; well / sump pumps; fridge and freezer; lighting and outlets; networking; selective laundry and cooking; majority-home or whole-panel coverage through a service-rated ATS. Low-THD output targets sensitive electronics and variable-speed HVAC when not overloaded.
Measure / calculate first. NEC-style load calc or approved energy management beats square-footage guesses. Generac notes ~3.5% capacity loss per 1,000 ft above sea level and ~1% per 10 °F above 60 °F. Fuel inlet pressure: about 3.5–7 in WC (NG) and 10–12 in WC (LP); pipe sized for full load. Published consumption (22 kW class, approx.): NG ~221 / 311 ft³/hr (½ / full); LP ~2.45 / 3.71 gal/hr (½ / full).
Will not replace a portable, a silent indoor battery night, or an electrician-free weekend. ATS not included on G0072600 — budget switch, gas upsizing, pad, and permits, or buy G0073250 intentionally.
Versus portables and stations: a dual-fuel inverter or ~2 kWh LFP station can cover a lean essentials stack for hours. They do not auto-transfer the whole panel. Usable Wh ≈ rated × 0.85. Worked 500 W line: AC200L (~2,048 Wh → ≈1,741 usable) ≈ 3.4 h — short stack, not a multi-day whole-house plant. Standby on NG/LP skips gasoline cans if the gas utility or LP tank holds.
Air-cooled, not liquid-cooled: fans across the engine; compact footprint; Generac lists placement as close as 18 in to a structure when listing and local codes allow (still clear of doors, windows, and intakes). Liquid-cooled sets add a radiator loop and different extreme-heat / commercial tradeoffs.
Hardware stack: pad + gas → G0072600 (or bundled G0073250) → listed ATS / load management → panel → indoor CO alarms. Professional install. Starting battery typically not included.
Skip if you rent. Skip fridge-and-modem-only needs — size a station or small inverter. Skip with no NG or LP, no outdoor clearance, or no permit path. Skip G0072600 if you need the ATS in the carton (that is G0073250). Skip if you need liquid-cooled or much larger commercial gear. Skip treating “22 kW” as free headroom for every EVSE, second A/C, and shop compressor without a load calc.
It depends. The Generac air-cooled 22 kW class (locked reference G0072600) is for homeowners who want automatic multi-kW backup on NG or LP, will fund pad, gas, ATS, and permits, and will size continuous load honestly — 21–22 kW, not a slogan. Wrong first buy for renters and fridge-only outages. Until ownership, fuel, ATS, and load calc are settled — It depends, not Buy.
